Replacing Lost or Destroyed Door Hardware Parts

If you stripped, lost, or destroyed installation parts, then click here.

The Cuesta Entry Set is one of our two solid bronze entry sets. Out of both front door hardware, it's the stronger, more masculine of the two. This guide elaborates on the paperwork that came in the box.  You’re probably reading this because the paper guide didn’t answer all of your questions. Hopefully this page does. If it doesn’t, call us.  We're happy to help.

Step 1

Make sure your active door is cut correctly

If you are installing hardware on two front doors, make sure that only one of them meets these requirements. This depicts the cuts on the active door, i.e., the door that you actually squeeze to open. The other door, the inactive door, is non-functional. If you only install this hardware entry set on one door, make sure that the one door you are installing it on has these measurements. Otherwise, the solid bronze door hardware won't fit.

Nearly all US doors come pre-cut like the diagram below. So installing our solid bronze Cuesta entry set should be easy. If your active door hasn't been cut yet, you should hire a carpenter to cut the door to these specifications. Any carpenter could do it. These are the dimensions of almost all US doors. We don't recommend it, but you could cut the door yourself. Learn how by Clicking here.

Step 1. Active Door Requirements

Step 2

Make sure your inactive door is cut correctly

If you are installing solid bronze hardware on two front doors, this is the measurement for the benign front door that you won't lock or squeeze to open; we call this the "inactive door." If this door doesn't at least meet these requirements, then call your local carpenter about cutting the door to the right specifications. If a contractor installed your front doors, then they probably already cut the door to meet these specifications. Most US doors have center-to-center measurement of 5-1/2 inches and a backset of 2-3/8 inches. The bore hole diameter also needs to be 2-1/8 inches diameter.

Step 2. Preparing The Innactive Door For Entry Set Installation

Step 3

Drill the bottom 3/8-inch guide hole

  • Using a power drill, drill a 3/8 inch hole into your door. Use the paper template that came with your hardware to figure out where. If you don't do this correctly, you could ruin your entire front door. Make sure that the hole is exactly where the bottom peg of the hardware needs to screw into. Don't rush this part. After you mark on the door where to drill, double check your measurements by holding your entryset against the door.
  • drill tip - Drill from the inside of the door. When the bit pokes through the wood, it splinters a little. If you drill from the inside, the splintered wood can be covered by the outside solid bronze base plate. The splintered, exit-end of the hole doesn't hide so well under the inside cap.

Step 4

Prepare the jamb for solid bronze door hardware installation

This diagram shows how to prepare the jamb. If you have only one door, then this needs to be installed in the jamb on the door frame. If you use 2 doors for one entry, then this step needs to be applied to the flange of the inactive door.

Here are the steps:

  • Where the dead bolt strikes, use a screwdriver to screw in the 2-1/2 inch silver wood screws into the upper left and lower left holes of the base plate.
  • User a screwdriver to screw the 3/4 inch wood screws into the center holes of the strike plates. The strike plates cover the base plate.

Step 5

Install the door hardware that faces the outside

Top Bore Hole For Solid Bronze Door Hardware

  • Insert dead bolt into the 1-inch bore hole. Out of the two vertical positions the dead bolt can be in, make sure its cross insert is on the bottom. The cross insert is what the tailpiece from the key cylinder slides into.
  • Make sure the bolt is in the unlocked (withdrawn) position.
  • Using a screwdriver, sink the two 3/4 inch screws in the flange edge of the dead bolt.
  • Insert the locking cylinder with the tailpiece horizontal.

  • Before you slide the entry set into its bore hole, make sure that the thumb latch is up. To do this, turn that post that the thumb latch turns until it's in its stiff, coiled position. In other words, make sure that after the front plate is installed, pressing down on the thumb latch will open the front door.
  • Slide the bottom guide peg of the handle into the hole you just drilled.

Step 5. Install The Outside Door Hardware Trim

Step 6

Install the door hardware that faces the inside

Top Bore Hole For Solid Bronze Door Hardware

  • Fix the stainless steel brace over the bore hole so that it looks like the diagram below.
  • Using a screwdriver, sink two silver 2-inch machine screws into the left and right hole of the stainless steel brace.
  • Using a screwdriver, insert one black 1-1/2 inch screw into the top hole of the door hardware.

  • Using a screwdriver, attach the lever or knob with the two black machine screws that measure #8 1-1/2 inch.
  • Use the Allen wrench to tighten the internal knob or lever after installation.

Step 6. Solid Bronze Door Hardware Installation for Inside the Door

Step 7

Install the inside bronze cap

  • Using a screwdriver, slide the screw into the cap washer. (See image below.)
  • With the cap attached (like images below,) slide the machine screw into the hole that you drilled.
  • Tighten the screw using the screwdriver.
  • Screw in the base cap using a screwdriver.
